Bounty Divers - Norfolk Island

When I grow up I want to be just like my dad and go diving all the time with Bounty Divers right here on Norfolk Island. Except I want to make more money than dad because he is always bloody broke...

Snorkelling Norfolk Island with Bounty Divers

Kids Snorkelling
I thought these pics turned out really well of some local kids doing a bit of snorkelling down at Emily Bay on Norfolk.
We had a few new divers this week at Bounty Divers and we have been down in the bay quite a bit. I have had my camera with me a bit too and got these pics of some young kids I know messing around above a coral head.
These young blokes where having a blast. Cant blame them look how good the water looks.

Banded Snake Eel Norfolk Island

Banded Snake Eel Norfolk Island
We saw this little sucker down at Emily Bay. Just swimming along near the outer reef, sticking his head into sand and rocks, forraging for food.
The Banded Snake Eel is supposed to be quite a rare sight. We see them when we are diving and snorkelling here on Norfolk quite often. I saw this one a few days in a row.
The Banded Snake Eel, unlike a banded Sea Snake, is not venomous and is essentially harmless. I am a huge hero, but dont like to get too close to them regardless...

Norfolk Island Humback Whales 2008

Norfolk Island Humpback Whale survey 2008

Adrian Oosterman for the last several years has been undertaking research on the migrating Humpback whales th=at pass Norfolk Island each year.
In 2008 Adrian decided to visit Norfolk Island for 3 months instead of the usual 1 month stint. This proved to be a very successful decision by Adrian as around 150 whales were observed during this period. compared to 8 Humpbacks observed the in 2007
Volunteers from France, England, Switzerland and Canada joined Adrian on our small Island to observe the annual migration and to help document the sightings.
Bounty Divers where very lucky to be involved in the project, providing support with the boat so that observations could be made from the water.
Unfortunately we were not able to obtain skin samples or any audio recordins of the whales singing. Better luck next year I hope.
Bounty Divers and Norfolk Islanders in general are very excited about the growing numbers of whales passing Norfolk on the annual migrations.
We hope that we may be able to help Adrian again next year and that the Whale Survey around Norfolk Island will continue for many years to come.

Some of the guys that have been participating in the coral watch program.

We are able to continue training young Norfolk Islanders to dive and monitor the health of the Islands coral using the University of Queensland Coral Watch Program, through generous funding from the Ivens (Toon) Buffet Environmental Trust Fund.

We have had a rough year of unpredictable weather. This was one of the days that we were able to get in the water from the Cascade pier.

This is my first post since my friend Cristina McRitchie set up this blog for me. I hope I have done it right and I hope to start posting alot more about the magnificent Scuba Diving that we have right here on Norfolk Island

Come & 'sea' us & meet the locals

Don't worry, these guys are harmless, they just want to meet you, not eat you.

Come and dive with us.......if you dare.
